Today we start a wonderful Book in The Book of Mormon.
In 3 Nephi Chapter 1, we are told that it has been 600 years since Lehi left Jerusalem and Lachoneus was the Chief Judge and Governor. Nephi left Zarahemla in the hands of his son, Nephi and left him with the Plates, the record that had been passed down since Lehi left Jerusalem.
The People started to jeer and snicker, making light of the stories of Samuel the Lamanite. They said the time is at hand and Jesus was not born so Samuel was wrong. They threatened believers of Jesus by saying that they would choose a day, and if the sign didn't happen, all of those who believed would be put to death after it was proved that there was no Christ being born.
Nephi started to become very sad and prayed to God earnestly, because his people who believed and had faith would be put to death if the birth of the Savior didn't occur by the day and time the non-believers set aside. The voice of the Lord told Nephi that the sign would be given that night, and by tomorrow he would be born!
The words of God were fulfilled. That evening the sun didn't go down and the light continued all night until the next morning. The people knew that Jesus Christ was born. A new Star did appear in the sky. Some still did not believe, but a better part did!
Nephi began to baptize and bring people to Christ and there was peace in the land. Soon however, The Gadianton Robbers started coming up again in power from the mountains and their hising places to influence the Lamanites to do wickedness. They started to lose their faith and righteousness.
Likening This Chapter Unto Me
It's fascinating to think that because of the threat of killing the People of God on this Continent, and Nephi's pleading with God to bring the sign of Jesus coming to prevent the murder of believers, that Jesus came when he did for that purpose to redeem the living with his birth and then to redeem the dead by his death! I have never thought of it that way!😮
I know that the bible teaches us that we can not know the hour or the day of Christ's second coming, but we know that we can recognize the signs! I want to be ready and watchful just like the faithful Church of God who believed and waited for the light that would last all night and day.
