3 Nephi Chapter 2, Satan led away the people and they started forgetting about the signs and wonders from the birth of Christ. They started to become hard hearted again and many fell away. They started being really wicked.
The Gadianton Robbers rose up again, plotting and murdering. The converted Lamanites united with the Nephites and decided to protect their families and freedoms/liberty against the tyranny of The Gadianton Robbers. The war was really awful and the Nephites were risking destruction.
The Lamanites who were righteous and joined the Nephites, became "white and fair" and began being called Nephites (this does not refer to skin tone, but rather being clean and fair in spirit and heart according to Church Scholars.
3 Nephi Chapter 3 talks about how the Gadianton Robbers Governor Giddeanhi, wrote to Lachoneus and told him to unite his people with the Gadianton Robbers or be destroyed! Lachoneus didn't listen, but told the Nephites to fortify themselves, prepare and secure their wives and children and prepare for war.
The people prepared and listened but they were afraid yet they obeyed the words of their Leader and prepared so that if war came to them they would be ready to defend their families, faith, and freedom.
Likening These Scriptures Unto Me
How often am I reading about how our leaders and Prophet ask us to prepare both spiritually and temporally for hardships and opposition. To keep pur minds and hearts involved in good things continually.
I want to take the example of the Nephites and keep myself clean morally, as well as being mentally and physically fit, and to be prepared for whatever will come my way in this life as I wait for the Second Coming of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
